DOUBT, A PARABLE

October 13-15, 2023

WCR Center for the Arts | 140 North 5th Street

This October, The Fall Festival of the Arts will present the critically acclaimed play, DOUBT, A PARABLE at the WCR Center for the Arts in Reading. Written by John Patrick Shanley, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a gripping and thought-provoking production that will leave you questioning your own beliefs and values.

Set in the 1960’s, DOUBT takes place in a Catholic school where Sister Aloysius, a strict and conservative nun, becomes convinced that Father Flynn, the charismatic priest, has been engaged in inappropriate behavior with one of the male students. As she begins to investigate, even though she has almost no proof, she becomes increasingly convinced of his guilt. Her certainty is challenged by impenetrable forces above her, doubts of those around her, and her own doubts about the institution to which she has devoted everything. Is this a play about an honorable priest who has been victimized and unjustly attacked and accused of criminal and immoral behavior, or is this a story about the heroic actions of a nun who is willing to face the wrath of a centuries old institution in a battle for the lives of the children that she has taken an oath to protect?

One of the strengths of DOUBT is that it doesn’t offer easy answers. Instead, it challenges the audience to think critically and come to their own conclusions. This makes for a truly engaging and enlightening experience that will stay with audiences long after the final bow is taken.
